Castiglione is located to the rim of Francavilla town but belongs to Catania Province and has little more then 3000 inhabitants. It’s located on a hillside on the northern side of Mount Etna and overhangs the Alcantara Valley that develops between Randazzo and the famous Taormina. Its territory is protected by two regional parks: the Etna Park and the Alcantara River Park. It’s surrounded by walls dating back to the Normans who drove out the Arabs and built a watchtower named “Cannizzo” and is located at the end of the city. From the viewpoint you can enjoy a magnificent scenery from the valley of the river that flows to the foot of hill. Another architectural interest point is the most important Byzantine Cuba present in Sicilian territory: Santa Domenica, which became a national monument during 1909.
