The Alcantara Gorges are located in the valley of the Alcantara River at the end of the Peloritani mountains range in eastern Sicily. It’s as a geographical boundary between the provinces of Catania and Messina flowing between basaltic lava stone walls that feature spectacular cooling structures with a colonnade disjunction caused by the rate of variation in the lava temperature. The most frequent structures are in vertical position, called “organ cane”, and reach heights of 30 meters. Into the territory of Francavilla of Sicily, we find the famous “Gurne of Alcantara” consisting of 16 small lakes excavated on the lava stone giving a wonderful landscape.
